ELEPHANT (2003) — Elephant is a piece of work that should be commended for its bravery. Such compliments are mainly intended to for Gus Van Sant's guts on using such non-linear and unusual narrative spectacle. Also packed with such unnatural risky styles which was really cost lot of guts.

Saya tidak akan muluk-muluk bilang kalau Atom Egoyan termasuk dalam jajaran sutradara terbaik yang dipunyai Bumi ini. Tapi saya berani bilang kalau Atom Egoyan termasuk sutradara yang menarik. Setidaknya bagi saya pribadi. Di satu kesempatan, Atom Egoyan bisa memberikan tontonan yang sangat substil, lalu di kesempatan lainnya sutradara ini tampil sangat mengecewakan. Poin utama yang membuat Atom Egoyan menarik ialah sutradara ini tidak pernah tampil sekedar satu dimensional.

Film ini merupakan sebuah romantic comedy yang dihiasi potret-potert cantik Verona, the city of love, yang juga latar terjadinya tragedi Romeo and Juliet. Yah, judulnya saja sudah mengatakan semua yang saya maksud di atas.

Film ini diadaptasi dari novel “Dear John” karya Nicholas Sparks.

YA, “Dear John” berhasil menampilkan senyuman manis Amanda Seyfried (sekaligus bikininya) sekaligus kegagahan Channing Tatum – sekalipun film ini bukan film tinju-tinjuan, urban, atau “G.I. Joe.” Permasalahannya, film ini gagal menampilkan apa yang sesungguhnya ingin ditampilkan. Saya sendiri belum pernah membaca novel Nicholas Sparks, jadi saya tidak akan mengunkit-ungkit novelnya. Hanya saja, untuk sebuah film romantis, “Dear John” terbilang gagal.
