ELEPHANT (2003) — Elephant is a piece of work that should be commended for its bravery. Such compliments are mainly intended to for Gus Van Sant's guts on using such non-linear and unusual narrative spectacle. Also packed with such unnatural risky styles which was really cost lot of guts.

Untuk kedua kalinya, setelah Blue Beard, Catherine Breillat, sutradara Perancis yang terkenal dengan film-film seputar urusan seks dan seksual, merombak dongeng ke dalam layar. (Sungguh disayangkan kali ini layar televisi yang kemudian wara-wiri di festival-festival, dan bukan sejak awal diniatkan untuk layar bioskop. Ah, samakan sajalah, film ya film, kan?) Kali ini Ms. Breillat mengangkat dongeng yang lebih dikenal khalayak luas, yang oleh Disney sudah diadaptasi-dirombak-rombak jadi entah produk kultural atau kapitalis semata. Tapi Breillat ya Breillat, dongeng Sleeping Beauty pun dirombaknya menjadi bukan konsumsi anak sebelum tidur.

Dunia semakin gila. Saya tak tahu, dengan persepsi dunia kekinian, apakah film ini dapat dikategorikan sakit jiwa. Mungkin saja masih bisa. Kembali ke masanya, menyajikan film semacam This Special Friendship jelaslah sebuah tindakan yang riskan. Cukup menelurkannya dalam wujud tulisan saja sudah kontroversial, apalagi memvisualisasikan. Tak heran, di masanya, film bertajuk homoseksual semata saja jarang ditemukan.
