Such compliments are mainly intended to for Gus Van Sant's guts on using such non-linear and unusual narrative spectacle. Also packed with such unnatural risky styles which was really cost lot of guts.

Kamera mengeksploitasi obyek anak-anak secara habis-habisan demi mengungkapkan betapa perihnya perang, betapa bobroknya moral, betapa asusilanya orang-orang dewasa, atau sekedar betapa tak sucinya dunia ini. Seakan-akan anak-anak sendiri diposisikan sudah cukup usia untuk menopang beban persoalan setara dewasa. Film semacam ini kerap kali dideretkan pada kelompok coming of age.

Tak heran, di masanya, film bertajuk homoseksual semata saja jarang ditemukan.
