ELEPHANT (2003) — Elephant is a piece of work that should be commended for its bravery. Such compliments are mainly intended to for Gus Van Sant's guts on using such non-linear and unusual narrative spectacle. Also packed with such unnatural risky styles which was really cost lot of guts.

Bisa dilihat cukup banyak perkembangan di film keempat ini, dibanding ketiga film selanjutnya. Yang paling mencolok, tidak seperti tiga film sebelumnya yang disajikan hitam-putih, film ini tampil berwarna. Lebih jauh lagi, kalau di tiga film sebelumnya, The Bakery Girl of Monceau, Suzzane's Career, dan My Night at Maud's, Éric Rohmer hanya menekankan pada tantangan terhadap prinsip tokoh utamanya, di La Collectionneuse, beliau mengembangkan seri Six Moral Tales ini ke arah yang lebih eksplisit – termasuk juga dari segi seksual.

Adalah sebuah pemikiran yang salah bila menganggap film yang terlalu banyak dialog adalah sesuatu yang buruk, Abbas Kiarostami serta Ethan Hawke dan Julie Delpy sudah membuktikannya. Dalam film ketiga dari Six Moral Tales ini, Éric Rohmer lebih bertopang pada dialog ketimbang narasi voice over seperti pada kedua film sebelumnya. Dalam My Night at Maud's, Éric Rohmer memanfaatkan dialog seefektif mungkin, sehingga dialog di film ini sama pentingnya dengan perbuatan-perbuatan fisik yang dilakukan tokohnya.

Menyenangkan memang menonton bagaimana seorang Éric Rohmer mengejawantahkan istilah “moral” dalam enam filmnya, yang semuanya tergabung dalam Six Moral Tales. Sekalipun mengemban kata “moral,” Éric Rohmer tidak lantas membuat film tentang larangan mencuri (atau semacamnya). Tentu ada “moral” dalam La Boulangère de Monceau, tapi Éric Rohmer membuat “moral” tersebut lebih komplikatif dengan membubuhkan berbagai macam keraguan. Yap, hal yang serupa juga saya dapati dalam La Carrière de Suzanne.
