ELEPHANT (2003) — Elephant is a piece of work that should be commended for its bravery. Such compliments are mainly intended to for Gus Van Sant's guts on using such non-linear and unusual narrative spectacle. Also packed with such unnatural risky styles which was really cost lot of guts.

Belum lagi standing ovation selama delapan menit yang dihadiahkan untuk film ini.

The Boys Next Door adalah sebuah film independent (a.k.a indie) besutan Penelope Spheeris, sutradara yang lebih dikenal dengan film-film dokumenter (sebut saja The Decline of Western Civilization). Seusai menonton film ini sampai habis, boleh dibilang suasana dokumenter cukup terasa di sini. Dan tentu juga film ini punya cacat di sana-sini, walaupun begitu, saya tidak merasa terlalu menyesal menonton film yang dibintangi dua teen idol era 80 ini. Nyatanya, saya terhibur. Ada poin-poin tertentu yang sebenarnya cukup menarik di sini.

Sebelumnya, dongeng tersebut juga peranah difilmkan oleh Michael Powell dan Emeric Pressburger di tahun 1948. Film ini dibuat di tahun 2005, di masa ketika Korea Selatan masih terkenal dan gencar dengan horror-horror cantik nan indahnya.

Film ini dibuat berdasarkan film Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941) karya Alexander Hall.

Ada yang pernah nonton Here Comes Mr. Jordan? Film itu dibintangi Robert Montgomery, dan kurang lebih bercerita tentang seorang petinju yang mengalami sebuah kecelakaan, tapi sebenarnya belum meninggal, namun nyawanya ditarik sebelum waktunya oleh malaikat. Di “tempat persinggahan” ternyata petinju tersebut seharusnya masih memiliki durasi lima puluh tahun lagi untuk hidup. Petinju itu pun berjumpa dengan seseorang (atau malaikat) yang bernama Mr. Jordan. Demi meluruskan kesalahpahaman ini, Mr. Jordan menawarkan sang petinju untuk hidup lagi dengan melalui tubuh seseorang yang baru saja meninggal tapi belum diketahui kematiannya oleh satu manusia pun.
